Three Gorges Dam risk study likely

China will likely commission a feasibility study on environmental risks related to the Three Gorges Dam to a US environmental group, the Wall Street Journal reported. The state-owned firm that owns and manages the dam is finalizing an agreement with the Nature Conservancy for a study that will minimize the ecological impact of the dam on the Yangtze River. The two firms have already signed an agreement to cooperate on research for four more dams upstream from the Three Gorges. The study would examine the dam's effectiveness in flood control, one of the project's stated aims. The Yangtze's seasonal flows could be restored, which would increase the chances of flooding but replenish lakes and rivers downstream.
