China blocks production of Hollywood movie
14 February 2008
China has blocked a Hollywood film from being shot in China due to script concerns, the AP reported. Production for the movie, "Shanghai," which will star John Cusack and Gong Li, may be moved to Hong Kong, though filmmakers could make changes to the script and reapply to China's Film Bureau. "Shanghai" is about an American who investigates his friend's death in Japanese-occupied Shanghai during World War II. Filmmakers have already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars preparing for the movie. China's concerns about the script were unclear, but Japan's invasion of China during World War II remains a sensitive topic.
