New auto emissions standards for Beijing

Beijing will introduce revised emissions standards for new cars next month amid concerns over the city's air quality ahead of the Olympics, the South China Morning Post reported. The plan will make Beijing the first mainland city to comply with Euro IV emissions standards, but it has been questioned by state media as being premature. The move, which comes at least two years ahead of a nationwide trial, underscores a conflict between Beijing's ambitions to cut pollution and the relatively low quality of its fuels. Fuel suitable for Euro IV-compliant autos will not be available outside of Beijing, and the new standards will not apply to the more than 3 million cars already in the capital.
