Beijing 'concerned' over Kosovo independence

China expressed "deep concern" over Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia, saying the move could lead to chaos in the Balkans, AFP reported. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said China was unhappy that Kosovo acted without first seeking the blessing of world powers through the United Nations. China, however, stopped short of expressing outright opposition to Kosovo's independence. Kosovo's parliament on Sunday unilaterally declared independence from Serbia, though Serbia has vowed to keep Kosovo within its borders. The United States and several members of the European Union have said they will recognize Kosovo. China has not said whether it will do so.
