Thousands evicted in Beijing ahead of Olympics

Olympics

20 February 2008

Almost 15,000 residents of Beijing have been relocated to make way for Olympic venues, the South China Morning Post reported, citing one of the city's top housing officials. The paper said that 14,901 residents in 6,307 households had given up their homes for the construction of 31 Olympic venues in Beijing. The Beijing municipal government claimed the residents were adequately compensated for their homes with cash or discounts on new apartments. The figure was far below calculations made last year by Geneva's Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions, which estimated that up to 1.5 million Beijing residents would be evicted from their homes in the run-up to the games.
