China denies plans to scrap the one-child policy

Society

3 March 2008

China has denied that it will abandon its one-child policy, Reuters reported, citing state media. The National Population and Family Planning Commission's publicity and education department said an official's earlier statements that the country would consider phasing out the policy were "incorrect" and "not verified." However, the earlier statements made by family planning minister Zhao Baige were backed up by Wu Jianmin, spokesman for the first session of the 11th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, who said at a press conference that "as things develop, there might be some changes to the policy and relevant departments are considering this." Wu did not disclose details on the timing of any potential changes.
