GE unable to verify labor claims at Chinese JV
27 March 2008
General Electric (GE) said it has not been able to substantiate allegations of overworked employees and unsafe working conditions at its Chinese fluorescent-lighting joint venture, Xiamen Topstar Lighting, Bloomberg reported. Policy Matters Ohio, a US nonprofit organization, alleged in a report based on interviews with workers at the Fujian province factory that Xiamen Topstar Lighting subjects workers to 64-hour workweeks and improper exposure to mercury. GE said it "immediately" dispatched an environmental health and safety team to the facility.
