Olympic flame arrives in Beijing

Olympics

1 April 2008

President Hu Jintao was in Tiananmen Square on Monday for the arrival of the Olympic flame in Beijing, Reuters reported. Security was tight as Hu handed the flame to Olympic champion hurdler Liu Xiang, who ran the first leg of a 130-day relay that will see the flame travel around the world. However, what was supposed to be a "Journey of Harmony" ahead of the games in August could well serve to trigger protests over Tibet. China increased its attacks on the Dalai Lama. A report from the government's official news agency said Beijing had evidence that the Dalai Lama and his supporters are planning a wave of anti-China unrest this month. The Dalai Lama's office rejected the claim. Meanwhile, the pro-Tibet protests continued in Nepal and Indonesia.
