China: Tibetan activists plan suicide attacks

Society

2 April 2008

Chinese authorities said that Tibetan activists, including the Dalai Lama, are planning suicide attacks within China, the Wall Street Journal reported. Tibet's government in exile denied the allegations. A spokesman for China's Ministry of Public Security said that "to our knowledge, the next plan of the 'Tibet Independence' forces is to organize suicide squads to launch violent attacks." Tibetans said that the government had coerced the confession of a suspect who said he was involved in coordinating the attacks. Hundreds of people have been arrested in China following anti-government riots that began in Lhasa in mid-March.
