China: Olympic torch will come to Tibet

The top Chinese Communist Party official in Tibet has insisted that the Olympic torch will pass through the region in late June, AFP reported. Sunday's statement by Zhang Qingli comes as the initial stages of the torch relay have been dominated by protests against Beijing's recent crackdown on bloody anti-China riots in Tibet. There were chaotic scenes as the torch passed through London on Sunday. Chinese state media condemned the "vile misdeeds" of the protesters. Meanwhile, it is claimed that the government is intensifying its political-education campaign in Tibet. A circular issued to party members and government officials in the region instructs them "to play an active role in maintaining social stability with more loyalty." The Chinese government is now looking to hire an international public relations firm to provide advice on strategies to repair its image ahead of the Olympics.
