Bush will still attend Olympics but urges Dalai talks
10 April 2008
US President George W. Bush said he still plans to attend the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Beijing, but urged Chinese leaders to open a dialogue with the Dalai Lama, Reuters reported. Bush's comments came as the US House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution asking China to end its crackdown on Tibetan protests and open talks with the Dalai Lama. A number of high-ranking Democrats, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, have called for a boycott of the opening ceremony, while Barack Obama has made similar calls, though in less direct language.
