Torch relay finishes India leg without incident
18 April 2008
The India leg of the Olympic torch relay was completed largely uneventfully, although amid heavy security presence, the Wall Street Journal reported. Some 15,000 security personnel in New Delhi were tasked with preventing protestors from coming near the relay. India is home to 100,000 Tibetan refugees, Tibet's exiled parliament and the Dalai Lama. Twelve protestors were arrested after 100 people tried to get past a security cordon at the Chinese embassy on Wednesday. An additional several dozen were arrested across the city in minor skirmishes with police on Thursday. A protest march of 5,000 people took place the same day.
