Telecoms

23 April 2008

South Korean telecom carrier SK Telecom is approaching China Telecom for a possible mainland joint venture focused on code division multiple access (CDMA) technology, the South China Morning Post reported. Fixed-line provider China Telecom has been rumored to receive a CDMA network from mobile carrier China Unicom in a long-awaited restructuring of China's telecom industry. The paper said  SK Telecom, which owns 6.62% of China Unicom, is making plans for a CDMA joint venture prior to the official announcement of the industry shakeup. It was unclear what shape the proposed joint venture would take, and analysts said it would be a challenge to create a successful CDMA business in China.
