Vice Premier urges Hainan to 'beef up' reforms
28 April 2008
Vice Premier Li Keqiang called on Hainan to "beef up reforms" and pursue "breakthroughs in key industries" during an inspection tour of the island as it celebrated 20 years as a Chinese province, state media reported. Li said Hainan, which had previously been part of Guangdong province, should aim to develop its logistics sector to become a shipping hub in the South China Sea. Hainan's economy has grown 7.6 times since 1988, when it was granted provincial and special economic zone status.
