Dalai Lama proposes fresh talks with Beijing

The Dalai Lama said on Monday that he expects his representatives to hold talks with officials from Beijing in the next month, the Wall Street Journal reported. The proposal for further talks, which the Dalai Lama said was made by the Tibetan side, comes after a one-day meeting earlier in May, which took place in Shenzhen and focused on calming unrest in Tibet. The meeting failed to deliver a consensus between the two sides. The Dalai Lama gave no preconditions for the new talks but called on the Chinese government to carry out a "realistic review" of how it runs Tibet. He also wants to see an investigation of the anti-China riots that broke out in March and their aftermath. This review should involve international organizations and foreign media, he said. Beijing has yet to respond to the offer of talks, the Dalai Lama added.
