China, US hold security talks on nukes, space weapons
5 June 2008
China and the US held security talks in Beijing about space weaponization, Iran and North Korea, AFP reported. The talks, the first of their kind since 2004, were led by assistant Chinese foreign minister He Yafei and US undersecretary of state for arms control and international security John Rood. Rood said the US raised concerns about alleged Chinese cyber warfare on US targets and the China's anti-satellite missile test during the talks. He also said the US explained its plan to develop missile defense systems with Japan, and said that the systems would not harm Chinese interests. Both sides also went over ongoing negotiations with Iran and North Korea regarding their nuclear weapons ambitions.
