The Tangjiashan "quake lake" was successfully drained, AP reported. Sichuan province's Party secretary said a "decisive victory" had ended the threat of flooding posed by a lake that had been formed by landslides from last month's devastating earthquake. Half of the water contained in the lake had been drained by Tuesday evening. A diversion canal for the lake's water had been created, with dynamite and anti-tank weapons used to destroy boulders and other obstacles in the channel. More than 250,000 people living downstream had been evacuated in anticipation of the lake bursting its banks.
