French firm seals Guangdong nuclear deal

French energy company EdF will build two nuclear reactors in Guangdong province after signing a joint venture agreement with local player China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corp, AP reported. The nuclear reactors will be housed in next-generation power stations in the city of Taishan in Guangdong. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the deal "demonstrates the quality of the Franco-Chinese partnership in the civilian nuclear sector." The Taishan facility will be modeled on an existing development in the northwestern French city of Flamanville. EdF is to retain a 30% holding in the joint venture for 30 years. Two other French companies, state-owned nuclear giant Areva and Alstom, will provide equipment for the plants.
