Six new extensions will be built for the Qinghai-Tibet Railway by 2020, state media reported, citing the Ministry of Railways. The new lines will include extensions connecting Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, with Nyingchi and Shiagatse, and a line connecting Golmud in Qinghai province with Dunhuang, Gansu province. The railroad will be extended elsewhere as well, including lines from Golmud to Kaola in Xinjiang, from Golmud to Chengdu, Sichuan province, and from Xining, the provincial capital of Qinghai, to Zhangye in Gansu. Ministry spokesman Wang Yongping said the new lines would boost the western region's economy.
