Nissan may build all-electric cars in Guangzhou
November 23, 2009
Japanese carmaker Nissan has hinted at plans to begin producing all-electric cars in Guangzhou, the Wall Street Journal reported. Nissan signed a deal with the government of Guangzhou on Sunday, committing the company to studying ways of promoting zero-emission cars in China. During a speech at the signing ceremony, Nissan Executive Vice President Hiroto Saikawa said that the company is looking at the economic rationale for producing its all-electric Leaf brand cars in China. Guangzhou Mayor Zhang Guangning added: "Based on our agreement with Nissan today, we're going to try to help electric-vehicle technology go mainstream and help Nissan mass-produce electric cars." Nissan is due to begin marketing Leaf cars in Japan and the US in 2011. The company hopes to leverage the fact that, unlike other hybrid cars, its vehicles are entirely emission free.
