IBM to build first cloud computing center in China

zone wuxi 1IBM will establish the first Cloud Computing Center for software companies in China, at the new Wuxi Tai Hu New Town Science and Education Industrial Park in Wuxi, China.

Cloud computing is an approach to shared information technology (IT) infrastructure in which large pools of systems are linked together to provide IT services.

Cloud computing allows corporate data centers to operate more like the Internet by enabling computing resources to be accessed and shared as virtual resources in a secure and scalable manner.

zone wuxi2The center will be built using IBM’s ‘Blue Cloud’ technologies, a series of cloud computing software based on open standards and open source software which link together computers to deliver Web 2.0 capabilities such as mashups (love the name), open collaboration, social networking and mobile commerce.

This new center will offer Chinese software companies the ability to tap into a virtual computing environment to support their development activities.

IBM will work with Wuxi Tai Lake Industry Investment and Development, the Wuxi municipal government, and its business partners to build the China Cloud Computing Center. This will be a shared facility providing each software company in the park with its own virtualized computing resource.

Microsoft to open training center in Wuxi hi-tech zone

zones wuhi new districtMicrosoft China plans to set up an IT training center in Wuxi to turn out skilled professionals to work in the city’s emerging IT industry.

The Chinese branch of Microsoft and the Wuxi government have signed a deal to establish the training program.

Wuxi New District, the city’s hi-tech zone, will provide infrastructure for the training center, while Microsoft will bring the technical platform and program. The center is expected to offer professional IT training to 10,000 students a year. Wuxi New District is located between the Yangtze River and Taihu lake, the third largest fresh water lake in China and is about 80 miles west of Shanghai.

Yang Weize, Party chief in Wuxi, said it is committed to developing the city into the country’s leading outsourcing center.

Wuxi plans to have 100 companies providing international outsourcing services and exporting software by 2010. Each company will employ at least 2,000 staff and will have an export volume of $30 million.

The city’s per capita GDP is expected to surpass $10,000 this year and the manufacturing industry still dominates the local economy.

IBM brings virtualization to China

zone wuxiIBM will establish the first Cloud Computing Center for software companies in China in an industrial zone, offering emerging Chinese software companies in that zone the ability to tap into a virtual computing environment to support their development activities. It will be established with IBM and Wuxi Tai Lake Industry Investment and Development

The Cloud Computing Center will be in Wuxi Tai Hu New Town Science and Education Industrial Park which is home to dozens of new software companies and represents a multimillion dollar investment.

iSoftStone, one of the new software companies in the park, plans to develop account settlement software for the financial services industry.

Wuxi is classified as an investment zone by the Chinese government and has been named a ‘National Model City of Science and Technology Advancement’ for five consecutive years.

Companies in the park will be able to access these common services provided by the center at any time — just as they use utilities and other shared services.

The technologies being offered include IBM Rational software development tools, WebSphere Application Server software and DB2 database software running on IBM System x, System p and BladeCenter servers. IBM Tivoli systems management software will manage the cloud computing environment.
