Expansion planned for mobile networks

The Chinese joint venture of French telecoms equipment maker Alcatel has won two contracts worth US$27m to expand wireless networks owned by China Mobile Communications. Alcatel Shanghai Bell will expand the global system for mobile communications (GSM) networks run by the state-owned company in the provinces of Jilin and Gansu.

Meanwhile, Nortel, the Canadian-based telecoms equipment maker, has won a US$27m contract to expand China Mobile's GSM cellular network in Shaanxi province.
